Adania Shibli

I’m suffocating. I want to play / Lecture

Part of “Violence of Inscriptions”

Dialogue

English / approx. 90 minutes

How do “playing” and “cunningness”, two terms which are respectively borrowed from economist Amartya Sen and playwright Bertolt Brecht, manifest themselves in private and in public as tenable measures for resting and countering tyranny, exploitation and deep inequality? This talk by Adania Shibli identifies instances in which playing and cunningness are put into practice as means to cope with everyday life and movement under condition of oppression and systematic violence in Palestine. Among other instances, it looks at how neighbourhoods were turned into sets for playing a theatre staged for the Israeli interior ministry; building sites as locations for playing hide and seek with Israeli police, and the narrow allies in refugee camps for playing marble against claustrophobic attacks.
