A hundred and thirty years ago a conference took place in Berlin with the main propose of dividing up the African continent. How much is known about this period in history and how are cultural institutions and artists from Berlin dealing with the colonial legacy? The panel discussion will try to understand how the topics addressed by the festival “Return to Sender“ are dealt with (or not) inside Berlin’s cultural institutions. What are the traps and the blind spots one can encounter, not only in artistic practice, but also in the public spheres created by institutions. Performer and theatre theorist Alexander Karschnia (andcompany&Co.), curator Bonaventure Ndikung (Savvv Contemporary), theatre-maker, author and activist Simone Dede Ayivi (Bühnenwatch and Bündnis kritischer Kulturpraktiker_innen), Agnes Wegner managing director of Humboldt Lab Dahlem and Kwesi Aikins (Initiative Schwarze Menschen Bund e.V., No Humboldt 21) will discuss these topics.
