“Fiddler! One Night Only!” is a new version of the 2023 show “Fiddler! A Musical”, focusing on music in a conversational setting. Subversive and funny, minimalist and poppy, Jewish and universal, it draws a line from folk traditions of the past into a strange, and hopefully better, future.
Paying a loose homage to the Broadway hit that brought Yiddish art to the masses, the evening explores the traditions of 20th-century Jewish performative crafts and their relations to exile, expulsion and state violence.
In our era of social upheaval and transformation, Sholem Aleichem’s timeless story about Tevye and his daughters still resonates as a tale of complicated belonging. Right here where we live, we see the tradition of instrumentalizing Jewish identity being played out again, this time to further a reactionary agenda under the guise of protection. With this abstracted version of the story, Ariel Efraim Ashbel and friends wish to remember, highlight and celebrate another tradition: a minority tradition of accountability, solidarity, and complexity in meeting the world. When Tevye bargains his values with god, swinging between the modern need to revisit obsolete ideas on one hand, and protecting the unique life of his Jewish family in an ever-changing world on the other – it is in love that he finds his moral compass.
Throughout the evening, thought and action come together to create a playful ritual that embraces both celebration and grief. With compositions by Ethan Braun and performances by Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop, Jessica Gadani and Thelma Buabeng.
