Beyond Ballroom – Introduction House Lives Matter

  • Dialogue
English /  approx. 120 mins.

“Beyond Ballroom” offers a unique insight into the culture and social significance of the ballroom scene. The first panel will focus on representatives of House Lives Matter (HLM) – a grassroots initiative founded 2016 in New York that advocates for the well-being, rights and visibility of ballroom members and their houses. HLM is collectively run, has a broad regional base and is closely networked with the Hetrick-Martin Institute, which supports queer and trans young people – especially in the kiki scene.

The panel “Introduction House Lives Matter” will shed light on the origins and principles of the initiative, the influence of its leading players and the vision of a global expansion of the HLM Conference. The aim is to strengthen empowerment, education and sustainable leadership structures worldwide – and to promote structural change within the scene.

“Beyond Ballroom” will be moderated by Tabytha Maison Margiela, a renowned activist and human rights expert specialising in the fight for the rights of BIPoC transgender and queer communities. She is known for her work on the documentary film “The Stroll” and as co-host of the podcast “FQ Crazy Sexy Cool”.

The format is aimed equally at the ballroom community and a broad, interested audience.
