Ligia Lewis & Liz Rosenfeld

Choreographer Ligia Lewis and performance artist Liz Rosenfeld meet at the intersections of knowledge, access, (il)legibility, and erasure. They navigate a politically charged space, exploring family stories through movement, dance, and song. Through a strangely layered and nuanced play with the portraiture of their fathers – a dance between homage and critique – they interrogate that which they inherit (or refuse to) and demand the importance and (im)possibilities of what radical coalition can be, starting with their own togetherness.

As children of Jewish-US-American fathers defined by civil rights organizing, Lewis and Rosenfeld use this shared background to address their political disappointments in the present. Through their lived experiences as a black presenting femme and a trans-nonbinary person, the two artists explore choreographic and autobiographical connections. Using humor, they approach storytelling playfully to unpack identity.

Their collaboration critiques abstraction as a neutralizing force. This duet allows their embodied politics to converge in a messy, funny, tragic, and nuanced portrayal of Jewishness, blackness, transness, and the inherent unknowing of becoming.
