An old family scandal and fragmented crime stories: in “Trouble Score”, Luanda and Pablo Casella weave humour, magical realism and music into a moving, provocative journey through trauma, memory and connection.

The siblings, originally from Brazil and now living in Belgium, set out to uncover the truth behind a long-buried family scandal. From fragmentary crime stories, an incredible plot gradually unfolds which childhood innocence clashes with the distorted reality of trauma – against the backdrop of racial segregation and military dictatorship.

With plenty of humour and complicity, “Trouble Score” captures the fantastical, mysterious and often hallucinatory nature of family dynamics. The show turns to magic realism to transform negative events into pop songs, coping mechanisms into hyperbolic analogies, and destructive patterns into encouraging mantras.

With “Trouble Score”, long-standing artistic partners Luanda Casella and Pablo Casella return to the beginnings of their collaboration: in this distinctive blend of storytelling, concert and performance, multi-layered texts, sound samples and pre-recorded and live music come together to form a complex composition. A polyphonic evening exploring trauma, memory and the possibility of connection.

Theatre maker Luanda Casella, based at NTGent, is now playing at HAU for the fourth time, following “Ferox Tempus – Terror at its best” (2022), “Killjoy Quiz” (2023) and “Short of Lying” (2024).

Press reviews:

“Lua‘s language is chillingly vivid. Carried by the pulse of Pablo’s composition, they delve into the shame and violence of the past. Intense. Even before seeing the laser show (...) the entire theatre is used to create an impressive shield between the creators and their personal history (...) Heartbreaking” De Morgen (BE)

“Despite (or perhaps because of) all the theory, 'Trouble Score' is a sensitive, sensual performance about the finiteness of life. You tremble along with it, in your body and in your mind” Pzazz (BE)
