Culture and violence are at the heart of the artistic universe of Walid Raad. In “Les Louvres and/or Kicking the Dead,” co-produced by HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Raad takes visitors on a visit of his own exhibition installed in the theatre. Raad introduces the artworks and stage sets on display, and recounts the encounters that shaped their creation: from a World War I expert, museum docent and Vietnam veteran living in Belgium all the way to the design and building of Saadiyat Island in the United Arab Emirates. Thematically, he concentrates on the opening of the Louvre Abu Dhabi as well as the Département des Arts de l’Islam in the Paris Louvre. Along the way, Raad takes a few detours through the history of tall buildings in New York, Erich Maria Remarque’s art collection and the building of museums in the 20th century.
