What might personal photographs reveal about societal upheaval and change? For “Before What Came After”, artist and performance maker Vlatka Horvat invites a group of international women artists based in Berlin for a live encounter: They share images from their archives and weave together personal stories and reflections on migration, diaspora and change.
Through an improvised performance unfolding inside a rule-based structure, shared perspectives and dialogues emerge on the past, present and future – and on the possibilities for everyday resistance. Horvat and her guests draw on their experience of living in countries that have experienced some form of breakdown, upheaval or instability. The photographs they share—depicting everyday scenes, objects and places—become starting points for narratives, observations and speculations. As the performance progresses, diverse yet interconnected experiences of immigration and diaspora come into dialogue and personal image archives reveal traces of social and political change, and the seeds of possible futures.
Candice Breitz (born in Johannesburg) is an artist whose work has focused recently on the conditions under which empathy is produced, reflecting on a media-saturated culture in which strong identification with celebrity often runs parallel to widespread indifference to the plight of those facing real world adversity.
İz Öztat (born in Istanbul) adresses in her collective and individual artistic practice state violence and the denials inherent to official national narratives through form, material, space, and language. She works at the intersection of art and education across self-organized, institutional, and academic settings.
Marina Naprushkina (born in Minsk) is an artist who works across media, including painting, video and text. In 2007, she founded the “Office for Anti-Propaganda”. In her artistic practice, Naprushkina explores forms of resilience, feminist narratives and care networks
Season Butler (born in Washington, DC) is a writer, performer and dramaturg. She writes about youth and ageing, solitude and community, and the fragile architectures of hope through which people attempt to imagine liveable futures. Her debut novel “Cygnet” was published in 2019.
Hana Yoo (born in Busan) works with multimedia installation, film and performance. She explores collective anxiety and transcendental experiences shaped by polarisation and othering.
Bani Abidi (born in Karachi) uses video, photography, drawings and sound to tell stories about performances of power and ordinary people, often through quotidian details and absurd vignettes.
Vlatka Horvat (born in Croatia) works across forms, from sculpture, installation, collage and photography to performance, video, writing and publishing.
